On 19 November 2025, Ofgem granted Early Construction Funding (ECF) to the Western Isles HVDC Link as part of a wider package of fast-track clean power project approvals. The ECF allocation for the Western Isles project represents 11% of the updated total project cost and is intended to enable SSEN Transmission to secure long-lead supply-chain commitments ahead of the Final Project Assessment. Ofgem explicitly noted that the ECF does not constitute full funding approval for a project -- the project remains subject to subsequent regulatory and planning gates. The 1.8 GW HVDC link from Arnish (Isle of Lewis) to Beauly (mainland Scotland) is one of several SSEN Transmission projects accelerated under the Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment (ASTI) framework targeting 2030 clean-power deployment.
