In 2019, ADMIE completed the installation of a new compensation reactor at the 400 kV Acheloos substation (KYT Acheloos) as part of the Western Corridor reinforcement works, enhancing the onshore high-voltage substation infrastructure required for the interconnection project.
Construction of the Western Corridor interconnection project, developed by ADMIE, began in 2018. The project, with an initial budget of €110 million, involves extending the transmission system in western Greece, including new infrastructure along the Western Corridor in the Peloponnese.
Authority: Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy · Licence: Environmental Terms Approval Decision (AEPO) granting consent for the Western Corridor 400 kV route
The routing of the Western Corridor 400 kV transmission extension implemented by ADMIE was licensed by the Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy (YPEN) in 2014, based on the issuance of an Environmental Terms Approval Decision (AEPO), providing project-level consent for the authorised route.
Greek transmission system operator IPTO (ADMIE) has put the Western Corridor, a 400 kV Extra High Voltage transmission link connecting Megalopoli with Patras and Western Central Greece via an 18 km dual-circuit submarine interconnection between Rio and Antirio, into full operation, marking the first-time interconnection of the Peloponnese to the 400 kV system. The project strengthens the existing Crete–Laconia interconnection, alleviates congestion on previously 150 kV-only regional networks, enhances the security of electricity supply in the Peloponnese, and enables local thermal power plants to operate up to their maximum capacity, with Hellenic Cables responsible for the design, manufacturing, installation, protection, and connection of the submarine and land cables.
