In October 2020, the Scottish Government published the Sectoral Marine Plan for Offshore Wind Energy, formally designating the N1 Plan Option area west of Orkney and north of Sutherland—within which the West of Orkney Windfarm lies wholly—as one of 15 zones considered suitable for commercial-scale offshore wind development.
