On 27 June 2025, Scottish Ministers granted offshore consent for the 2 GW West of Orkney Windfarm, following a recommendation from the Marine Directorate Licensing Operations Team (MD-LOT), making it the first ScotWind project to secure both onshore planning permission and offshore consent. The decision grants Section 36 consent under the Electricity Act 1989 and associated marine licences under the Marine (Scotland) Act 2010 for up to 125 fixed-bottom turbines and the offshore transmission infrastructure located west of Orkney and north of the Sutherland coast.
