In June 2024, The Highland Council approved in principle the West of Orkney Windfarm’s onshore planning application, granting planning permission in principle for the underground cables and electrical infrastructure required to connect the offshore wind farm to the national transmission network in Caithness, including the new substation near Spittal and associated cable routes.
