DONG Energy and ScottishPower Renewables (joint venture, 50:50) submitted the Section 36 application under the Electricity Act 1989, together with the associated Food and Environment Protection Act 1985 (FEPA) and Coast Protection Act 1949 consent applications, to the Department of Trade and Industry in April 2006 for the West of Duddon Sands offshore wind farm — a 389 MW, 108-turbine project located approximately 14 km south-west of Walney Island off the Cumbrian coast of Barrow-in-Furness in the Irish Sea, immediately adjacent to the Walney site. West of Duddon Sands was a UK Round 2 project following The Crown Estate's December 2003 lease awards. The Section 36 application authorised the construction and operation of an offshore generating station including wind turbines, inter-array cables, met masts and offshore substations. Section 36 consent was granted by the Secretary of State in September 2008. Construction began in 2013 and commercial operation was achieved in October 2014. The project deployed 108 Siemens SWT-3.6-120 turbines.
