On 15 October 2015, DONG Energy (now Ørsted) awarded DeepOcean 1 UK Ltd a contract for the Walney Extension export and interlink transmission cables, covering route engineering plus installation and trenching of approximately 136 km of offshore export cables and a 23 km subsea interlink cable that link the two offshore substations to landfall near Heysham for onward connection into the onshore grid.
