On 8 May 2011, export cable installation for the Walney 2 grid connection effectively started at Cleveleys near Blackpool, when the cable‑laying barge Stemat Spirit beached close to shore and, at about 9 a.m., began pulling the 132 kV export cable from the onboard spool. By 19 May 2011 the vessel had already laid 7 km of the planned 29 km subsea section along the 44 km route between the Walney 2 offshore substation and the onshore substation at Cleveleys.
