DONG Walney Limited (UK), the development vehicle for the Walney project (subsequently developed as a partnership between DONG Energy and Scottish and Southern Energy via Walney (UK) Offshore Windfarms Limited), submitted the Section 36 application under the Electricity Act 1989, together with associated Food and Environment Protection Act 1985 (FEPA) and Coast Protection Act 1949 consent applications, to the Department of Trade and Industry in March 2006 for the Walney Offshore Windfarm — proposed at 450-600 MW capacity, located 14 km offshore Walney Island (Barrow-in-Furness) in the Irish Sea between the Cumbrian coast and the Isle of Man. The supporting Environmental Statement Non-Technical Summary is dated March 2006 on the cover page. The application covered the full Walney project; the project was subsequently developed in two phases — Walney 1 (this project) and Walney 2 — both of 184 MW comprising 51 Siemens 3.6 MW turbines each. Walney was a UK Round 2 project following The Crown Estate's December 2003 lease award. Section 36 consent was granted by BERR/DECC in 2008. Walney 1 construction began in March 2010 and commercial operation was achieved in May 2011.
