Wadkabels Holwerd - Ameland

Network operator Liander commissioned the new grid connection between Ameland and the Frisian mainland, including a new onshore switching station, with the system entering service in early May 2022 after winter construction works that crossed the sensitive Wadden Sea nature area and had to be completed before the start of the bird breeding season despite sabotage-related setbacks.

Independent reporting on WadgidsenWeb, citing Liander as source, states that the installation of the two new electricity cables between Holwerd and Ameland was completed in March 2022. The article notes that by 21 March 2022 all site huts and equipment had been removed and the salt marsh was being restored, following cable replacement and burial works carried out in February–March 2022 after earlier sabotage, indicating practical completion of cable installation by that date.

Onshore construction for Liander’s Wadkabels Holwerd–Ameland project started in August 2021, when contractor Verkley began laying two parallel land cables from the Liander substation in Holwerd to the transition joint on the salt marsh, and a parallel land cable of about 2 km from the transition joint to the station at Buren on Ameland, along with a 96-core fibre-optic cable. These works form part of Liander’s reinforcement and improvement of the electricity network to address capacity shortages and enable export of electricity from Ameland.

In August 2021, Liander and its contractors, including Verkley, commenced installation of two new electricity cables between Holwerd and Ameland. Work started with laying parallel land cables from the Liander substation in Holwerd to the transition joint to the sea cable on the salt marsh and a parallel land cable on Ameland from the transition joint to the station near Buren, with offshore and dike-crossing activities scheduled in the mid‑August to late‑November 2021 window to respect the bird breeding season.
