As part of the Duurzaam Ameland collaboration, Liander is upgrading Ameland’s grid connection to the mainland with a new 20 kV cable from Dokkum to the AME‑1 station on Ameland, with Shell noting that this new cable connection is planned to be in place during 2021 to support NAM’s AWG electrification project and additional solar PV on the island. A Dutch study on submarine cables further reports that in 2021 Liander laid two electricity cables to Ameland that also contain 96 fibre strands, indicating implementation of the upgraded mainland–Ameland link.
Authority: Gemeente Ameland (college van burgemeester en wethouders) · Licence: Omgevingsvergunning for installation of two medium‑voltage cables (wadkabels) between Holwerd and Ameland
The Municipality of Ameland, acting as competent authority, awarded an omgevingsvergunning (planning consent) for the installation of two 20 kV medium‑voltage cables between the switching station at the Grandyk in Holwerd and the new switching station at the Oude Grazingweg in Buren on Ameland, including land and sea sections across the Wadden Sea. The permit covers works that partly conflict with existing spatial planning rules (handelen in strijd met regels ruimtelijke ordening) and enables Liander N.V. to construct the new wad cables to increase electricity transmission capacity between Ameland and the mainland.
