As part of the Harlingen–Vlieland submarine cable project realised in 2006, a new substation was built in Harlingen near the monument ‘De Stenen Man’ and connected to the 20 kV cable, while on Vlieland the cable was connected to a local substation that now distributes electricity from the Dutch national grid across the island, replacing its previous reliance on local generators.
