For the 38km, 20kV submarine cable between Harlingen and Vlieland, engineers completed detailed cable route and burial design through the Wadden Sea, taking into account stakeholder preferences, strong local currents that can shift cables, and risks from ship anchors. To mitigate these constraints they selected a specific trajectory, increased burial depth from the usual 2m to 3m, specified 10cm-thick insulated cable instead of laying a second emergency cable, and added a signal wire to enable rapid fault location in emergencies.
