On 11 September 2020, Croatian utility HEP announced that over the next three years it would invest nearly 30 million HRK in electricity infrastructure projects on Vis island, prominently including the laying of new underwater cables between Hvar–Pakleni Islands and Vis and between Vis and Biševo, as well as new 20 kV cable lines between Ravno Stupišće and Smokova. This programme allocation signals dedicated capital for modernising the medium‑voltage submarine interconnector Vis–Biševo as part of broader efforts to improve the island’s energy security and self‑sufficiency.
Installation of the Vis–Biševo interconnector was completed in 1973, when a 10 kV submarine power cable (type DKRA 3x35 mm2 Cu, approximately 5,004 m long) was laid from the Gnjilina bay near cape Stupišće on Vis to Mezoporat bay on Biševo, providing the island of Biševo with an electrical connection.
In 1973 a 10 kV submarine electrical cable of type DKRA 3x35 mm² Cu was laid between Vis and Biševo, from the Gnjilina bay near cape Stupišće on Vis to Mezoporat bay on Biševo, completing the island’s electrification and bringing it into full operational service. This interconnection realised the long-standing wish of Biševo’s inhabitants to be connected to the mainland power system.
In conjunction with commissioning the Vis solar power plant, HEP announced that over the following three years it would invest nearly 30 million HRK in several island grid projects, including the laying of new 20 kV submarine cable lines Hvar–Pakleni Otoci–Vis and Vis–Biševo, as well as associated 20 kV land cables, to enhance the reliability of electricity supply on Vis and its satellite islands.
