New Virtsu–Võiküla 110 kV XLPE‑insulated HVAC undersea cable between Virtsu on the Estonian mainland and Võiküla on Muhu Island, total route length about 8 km (approximately 7 km subsea and 1 km onshore), installed to replace an existing 35 kV oil‑impregnated cable as part of Elering’s island supply security programme.
Elering awarded Empower AS the construction contract for the new Virtsu–Võiküla 110 kV undersea cable linking the Estonian mainland at Virtsu with Muhu Island at Võiküla. Under this contract, Empower carried out the construction and installation works, including preparatory activities, removal of one existing 35 kV oil‑impregnated paper insulated cable, and laying and burying the new XLPE‑insulated 110 kV cable along its approximately 8 km route (about 7 km subsea and 1 km onshore). The project aimed to significantly improve the security of electricity supply to Estonia’s western islands and replace ageing 35 kV connections. The public procurement for cable installation concluded with Empower’s winning bid, and Elering signed the contract in February 2014, with a construction value of 9.4 million euros and completion scheduled by late 2015.
