Vindpark Vänern

Vindpark Vänern is a small inland “offshore” wind farm located on the Gässlingegrundet shallows in Lake Vänern, Värmland, Sweden. At project level it was conceived as a pilot demonstration to test lake-based, hard-mounted turbine foundations and to open a new category of non-coastal offshore deployment. The development attracted attention as one of the first major attempts to site multiple utility-scale turbines in a large freshwater body and as a testbed for new foundation techniques. Construction began in the late 2000s and the site reached commercial operation around 2009–2010, with later commissioning activities and service works continuing into the 2010s. The park’s technical history has been mixed: it required significant drivetrain and gearbox interventions (outsourced to specialist service providers), experienced intermittent downtime on multiple machines, and prompted recurring maintenance and refurbishment campaigns. Commercially the project saw active municipal ownership and recapitalisation during its early years, followed by a sale process and a transfer of assets to new private owners in 2019. Operations and maintenance arrangements have evolved over time, with multi‑year service contracts being awarded to specialist providers. As a demonstration asset it has been useful to the Swedish market for lessons on logistics, weather‑dependent access, foundation behaviour in freshwater, and the cost/risk profile of non‑coastal offshore installations. The project’s public record is dominated by its pilot role, technical remediation efforts, and changing ownership and service arrangements.
