Single-route ~292 km, 150 kV HVDC Light monopole submarine power cable from Lista/Lundevågen in southern Norway to the Valhall oil field, with integral return conductor, supplying up to 78 MW of power from shore for full field electrification.
Nexans was awarded a turnkey subsea power cable contract by BP for the Valhall power-from-shore redevelopment. The scope covered engineering and design of the HVDC-IRC submarine cable system, manufacture of approximately 292 km of 150 kV HVDC Light power cable with integral return conductor, and delivery of a bundled fibre-optic cable. Nexans also undertook full offshore installation, including lay and burial of the cable between BP’s Lundevågen/Lista transformer station and the Valhall field, using the cable-laying vessel C/S Skagerrak and CapJet burial to around 1 m below the seabed. The project included associated equipment at the onshore land station and on the Valhall complex. Installation was carried out in 2008–2009 to enable start of power-from-shore operation around 2011, making Valhall the first offshore production field run exclusively on electricity from land. The contract was reported to be worth about EUR 98 million and represents the main subsea power export link for electrifying the Valhall field.
