ABB supplied the complete HVDC Light power-from-shore transmission system for BP’s Valhall redevelopment, under a contract worth about $50 million. The scope covered design, engineering, manufacture and installation of the onshore converter station at Lista, including its 300 kV AC switchyard connection to the Norwegian grid, and the offshore converter module on the new Valhall production and hotel platform. ABB’s delivery included transformers, filters, reactors, control and protection systems, and all main circuit equipment, enabling 78 MW of power to be transmitted over a 292 km subsea HVDC link. The Lista AC yard was built as a conventional outdoor substation arrangement to connect to either busbar in the existing grid switchyard. ABB also commissioned the link in 2011, replacing offshore gas turbines and allowing Valhall to be fully powered from shore.
