Statnett planned a coordinated grid connection solution for offshore wind from the Utsira Nord area following an instruction from Norway’s then Ministry of Petroleum and Energy (now the Ministry of Energy). The grid work covered connection concepts for up to 1,500 MW and included evaluating onshore connection points and reserving capacity for a 500 MW connection, with concepts involving a new transformer station on Utsira or at Karmøy west and onward connection to Statnett’s existing Karmøy transformer station. Statnett later ended further assessment work on the coordinated solution after the Ministry clarified that the assumptions for a shared 1,000–1,500 MW solution were no longer present.
