Siemens Energy, in consortium with Italian contractor FATA, secured an approximately €1 billion contract from Italian TSO Terna to supply four onshore HVDC converter stations for the Tyrrhenian Link interconnector between mainland Italy, Sicily and Sardinia. The contract covers both the East section (Campania–Sicily) and the West section (Sicily–Sardinia), with two converter stations on each section. Siemens Energy is responsible for the HVDC transmission technology, including the design and engineering of the converter systems and the manufacture of the main electrical components such as converter valves, transformers and high-voltage switchgear at its European facilities. The stations will each enable up to 1 GW of power exchange, improving grid stability and supporting Italy’s transition away from coal-fired generation on the islands. Construction and commissioning of the converter stations are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2028.
