DELAYED +2yr (Apr 2026): Terna and the EIB continue to state that the Tyrrhenian Link will be fully operational in 2028, and Terna’s 2022 east-branch authorisation release uses the same date. However, Siemens Energy’s March 2023 contract press release schedules completion of the four HVDC converter stations for the end of 2028, leaving little room for full system commissioning earlier in the year. In addition, ENTSO-E’s TYNDP 2026 project portfolio now lists the Tyrrhenian Link with a commissioning year of 2029. Given this more recent ENTSO-E timeline, the late-2028 converter completion schedule, and typical integration and testing durations for large HVDC interconnectors, the original projection of 1 January 2028 for full commercial operation appears optimistic. Adjusting the full-power COD to 2029 while referencing Terna’s stated 2028 target provides a more realistic in-service year. --- The 970-kilometre, 1,000 MW Tyrrhenian Link HVDC interconnector, connecting Sicily, Sardinia and mainland Italy (Campania), is scheduled to reach full commercial operation in 2028. This milestone will follow completion of the subsea cable system and four converter stations and will enable up to 1 GW of power exchange on each section, strengthening Italy’s grid, facilitating renewable integration and enhancing energy security.
