Thanet Offshore Wind Limited (TOW), a subsidiary of Warwick Energy Limited, submitted the Section 36 application under the Electricity Act 1989, together with the associated Food and Environment Protection Act 1985 (FEPA) and Coast Protection Act 1949 consent applications, to the Department of Trade and Industry in November 2005 for the 300 MW, 100-turbine Thanet offshore wind farm located approximately 12 km off Foreness Point, north-east Kent, in the outer Thames Estuary. The supporting Environmental Statement was prepared by Royal Haskoning Ltd and dated November 2005, following an EIA scoping report produced in July 2004. Thanet District Council and Dover District Council were statutory consultees in the Section 36 consent determination. Thanet was a UK Round 2 project following The Crown Estate's December 2003 lease awards. Planning permission was granted on 18 December 2006. Vattenfall AB acquired Thanet Offshore Wind Limited from Warwick Energy in November 2008. The wind farm was constructed during 2009-2010 and inaugurated on 23 September 2010, briefly holding the title of world's largest operational offshore wind farm at 300 MW from 100 Vestas V90-3.0 turbines.
