Two parallel 132 kV HVAC export cables, each with a total route length of about 28.6 km (approximately 26.2 km subsea and 2.4 km onshore), connecting the Thanet offshore substation to the onshore substation at Richborough and forming the Thanet OFTO export cable system operated and maintained by Balfour Beatty.
Balfour Beatty Power Transmission & Distribution, part of Balfour Beatty’s Services division, was engaged to provide operations and maintenance services for the Thanet OFTO transmission assets. Under the 20-year Ofgem licence, the company is responsible for operating and maintaining the single offshore substation, the onshore substation at Richborough and the associated transmission circuits, including more than 50 km of subsea export cables linking the 300 MW Thanet Offshore Wind Farm to the onshore grid. Its role covers routine inspection, preventive and corrective maintenance, and fault response to ensure high availability and reliable power transmission over the asset’s regulated life.
