On 17 December 2014, The Gas and Electricity Markets Authority (Ofgem) awarded Thanet OFTO Limited an Offshore Electricity Transmission Licence, permitting and requiring the company to maintain and operate the Thanet offshore electricity transmission assets. The licence under the Electricity Act 1989 underpins the OFTO’s 20‑year regulated revenue entitlement starting from the date funds were drawn to acquire the transmission system.
