In 2000, Kraftnät Åland brought a new 80 MW submarine cable connection to Sweden into service, providing a long-term secure electricity supply route for Åland. This HVAC interconnector, known as Sverigekabeln, became the primary link between the Åland power system and the Swedish grid.
Kraftnät Åland reports that the first Sverigekabeln, the interconnector cable to Sweden, was put into service in 1973, marking the commissioning of the associated onshore facilities needed to operate the link.
