Sørlige Nordsjø II Phase 2 is the second phase of the Sørlige Nordsjø II offshore wind area in the southern Norwegian North Sea; the overall site was opened for offshore wind and allocated 3,000 MW across two phases. Phase 2 remains at an early, pre-tender stage: a formal tender date has not been...
In April 2024, researchers published a metocean study of the Sørlige Nordsjø II area using the NORA3 hindcast dataset for 1982–2022, providing high-resolution climatology for wind and wave conditions. The work characterises mean and extreme wind speeds, wave heights, and joint distributions of key parameters, confirming SN II as one of the North Sea’s most promising regions for offshore wind and supplying design-relevant data for projects in the area, including the planned Sørlige Nordsjø II Phase 2 development.
By 9 June 2023, the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) had completed an analysis of different grid connection solutions for Sørlige Nordsjø II Phase 2, assuming a 1,400 MW wind farm connected to bidding zone NO2. The study compared radial and hybrid offshore grid concepts, assessing producer revenues and wider socio-economic benefits, and found that large hybrid solutions yield higher societal value mainly through congestion revenues, even though they do not significantly increase the wind producer’s earnings.

The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE), on commission from the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy, is carrying out an assessment of offshore transmission infrastructure alternatives that uses Sørlige Nordsjø II Phase II as its starting point. The study focuses on potential grid connection solutions for the phase 2 area—evaluating options such as radial links to Norway, hybrid connections to Norway and neighbouring countries, connections only to neighbouring countries, and other hybrid configurations—and was planned for publication around October 2022 to inform long‑term offshore grid and export strategy in the southern Norwegian economic zone.
In spring 2022, the Sørlige Nordsjø II offshore wind area was formally divided into two development phases, each with up to 1,500 MW of installed capacity. This decision established Sørlige Nordsjø II Phase 2 as the second 1.5 GW phase of the overall 3 GW SN II development, to be tendered separately from Phase 1.
On 12 June 2020, the Norwegian government opened the Sørlige Nordsjø II area, located in the southern North Sea near the Danish border, for offshore renewable energy production with a total capacity of 3,000 MW. This area designation underpins development in two 1,500 MW phases, including the future Sørlige Nordsjø II Phase 2 project within the overall SN II zone.
