Turnkey ±320 kV HVDC symmetrical monopole export cable system (two parallel cables) connecting Sofia’s offshore converter station on Dogger Bank (~220 km subsea route) to the onshore converter station in Teesside (~7 km onshore), forming the Sofia OFTO export link.
Prysmian Group held a turnkey EPC contract from RWE Renewables for the Sofia Offshore Wind Farm’s HVDC export cable system, which will form the transmission assets of the Sofia OFTO link. Following a preferred bidder award in November 2020, the contract was signed in March 2021 and covers the design, manufacture, and delivery of a ±320 kV symmetric monopole HVDC cable system connecting Sofia’s offshore converter station on Dogger Bank to the onshore converter station in Teesside. Prysmian’s scope includes offshore route preparation, installation, jointing, burial, protection, and commissioning of more than 440 km of submarine export cables with XLPE insulation, together with about 15 km of onshore export cables using P-Laser technology, plus associated communications cables. The work is being executed using Prysmian’s new cable-laying vessel Leonardo da Vinci, with commissioning aligned to the project’s mid‑2020s construction schedule.
