J. Murphy & Sons was awarded a multi-million-pound contract by RWE to deliver the HVDC export cable onshore civil works for the Sofia Offshore Wind Farm OFTO transmission assets, with the same contract package also covering the neighbouring Dogger Bank C project. Murphy's Sofia scope covered design and installation of approximately 7 km of onshore cable ducts for the ±320 kV HVDC export cable circuit between the Redcar landfall and the new onshore converter station near Lackenby, plus approximately 2 km of cable ducting for the 400 kV HVAC connection between the onshore converter station and National Grid's Lackenby substation. The package included detailed engineering, ecological management, civil infrastructure installation and crossing engineering. Main civil works commenced in March 2022 and ran through to the end of 2024, after which Prysmian's HVDC cable circuits and the 400 kV AC cables were pulled through the installed ducts to complete the onshore transmission build.
