Skagerrak 4 is a 500 kV HVDC interconnector between Kristiansand (Norway) and Tjele (Denmark), implemented as a single monopole cable solution over the full 240 km route, comprising about 140 km subsea and 104 km onshore land cable. Nexans supplied the 140 km subsea HVDC cable across the Skagerrak strait and a 12 km underground land cable on the Norwegian side.
Nexans was contracted by the transmission system operators Energinet (Denmark) and Statnett (Norway) to provide the HVDC power cable system for the subsea section of the Skagerrak 4 interconnector and the short onshore link on the Norwegian side. The scope covered design, manufacture and installation of a 500 kV mass-impregnated non-draining (MIND) subsea cable over the 140 km Skagerrak strait between Jutland and Kristiansand, including associated fibre‑optic cable, seabed burial using the Capjet trenching system, and protection works. Nexans also supplied and installed a 12 km underground land cable connecting the subsea cable to the Kristiansand HVDC converter station. The contract, valued at approximately €87 million, formed the core of the electrical interconnection’s submarine link and contributed to increasing transfer capacity between Norway and Denmark by about 700 MW.
