ABB supplied the high‑voltage direct current converter infrastructure for Skagerrak 4, delivering two 700 MW Voltage Source Converter (HVDC Light) stations at Tjele in Denmark and Kristiansand in Norway. The scope encompassed design and engineering of the VSC converter stations, manufacturing of key HVDC components including valves, transformers and associated equipment, and construction and commissioning of the onshore converter stations. These stations interface the 500 kV monopole DC cable with the Norwegian and Danish AC grids and operate in a hybrid bipole arrangement with the existing Skagerrak 3 link, raising total interconnector capacity between Norway and Denmark to about 1,700 MW.
