Skagerrak 4 is a 500 kV HVDC interconnector between Norway and Denmark using a continuous cable solution over the full 240 km route, including a 140 km subsea section that is subject to periodic protection and condition surveys.
MMT was contracted by Statnett to perform a protection and condition survey of the Skagerrak 4 HVDC cable, in conjunction with the NorNed interconnector. For Skagerrak 4, MMT carried out detailed high-resolution offshore ROV-based cable tracking and seabed surveys from shallow water off Denmark to the Norwegian landfall at Kvivika. The work included multibeam echosounder, side-scan sonar and TSS cable tracking to map the cable route, trench, berms and engineered crossings, and to determine cable burial depth and exposure. The survey supports Statnett and Energinet.dk in ongoing operation and maintenance of the interconnector by identifying any free spans, shallow burial or potential damage along the subsea cable.
