ABB designed, manufactured, and installed the onshore HVDC converter stations for the Skagerrak 3 link between Kristiansand in Norway and Tjele in Denmark. Commissioned in 1993 as a 350 kV, 440 MW monopolar addition to the existing Skagerrak 1–2 scheme, Skagerrak 3 increased the transfer capacity between the Norwegian hydro-dominated system and the Danish wind and thermal-based system. ABB supplied the converter substations at both ends of the link, extending the original interconnector and forming part of the Skagerrak 1–3 scheme, which totals 240 km with overhead line and submarine cable sections.
