Statnett, together with Energinet, submitted a formal project notification (“melding”) to the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (Norges vassdrags- og energidirektorat, NVE) in September 2024 regarding a potential reinvestment in the Skagerrak 1 and 2 HVDC interconnector cables between Norway and Denmark. The notification outlines route alternatives for the direct-current connection between the converter facilities and landfall, including both overhead line and underground cable options, alternative landfall locations and subsea cable routes, as well as construction and removal of converter installations at Kristiansand transformer station. The measures described affect Agder county, specifically the municipalities of Kristiansand, Vennesla, Birkenes and Lillesand. Submission of the melding initiated NVE’s processing and subsequent public hearing as part of the permitting process for a possible reinvestment of the aging SK1 and SK2 links.
