420 kV XLPE HVAC subsea power cable crossing Fensfjorden in western Norway, approx. 7.7 km fjord route at up to ~550 m water depth, used to reinforce the regional 420 kV transmission connection.
Nexans Norway designed, type-tested, manufactured and installed the 420 kV XLPE subsea power cable forming the Fensfjorden fjord crossing in western Norway. The company qualified the cable for installation at a world‑record depth of around 550 m through an extensive type‑testing programme, then developed and produced the project-specific Fensfjorden cable at its Halden plant. The subsea link, approximately 8 km across Fensfjorden, is part of a 420 kV grid reinforcement scheme in the Modalen–Mongstad area and strengthens the regional transmission network. Offshore installation on the seabed of the fjord was carried out by Nexans’ own cable‑laying vessel, C/S Nexans Skagerrak, later in 2019, covering the construction phase from manufacturing through laying and commissioning of the deep‑water AC fjord crossing.
