Shetland HVDC Link: 600 MW ±320 kV symmetric monopole HVDC connection with 2 parallel cables along a ~266 km route between Kergord (Shetland) and Caithness on the Scottish mainland.
SSEN Transmission awarded NKT A/S a turnkey contract to design, manufacture and install the high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable system for the Shetland HVDC Link between Kergord in Shetland and Caithness on the Scottish mainland. The contract, valued at about €235 million, covers both subsea and onshore 320 kV DC power cables, including their detailed design, production in NKT’s Karlskrona facility, and offshore installation using the cable‑laying vessel NKT Victoria. NKT is responsible for delivering the full cable scope for the 600 MW, ±320 kV symmetric monopole link, which connects Shetland’s grid and renewable generation to Great Britain’s transmission system, with commissioning targeted for 2024.
