SSEN Transmission appointed Hitachi ABB Power Grids (now Hitachi Energy) as the HVDC technology supplier for the Shetland HVDC Link. Under this construction-phase contract, Hitachi Energy designed, manufactured, supplied and commissioned the onshore HVDC system, including the converter station at Kergord on Shetland and the HVDC switching station at Noss Head in Caithness. The company provided the main HVDC equipment, control and protection systems and associated apparatus needed to connect Shetland into the existing Caithness–Moray 320 kV scheme, creating Europe’s first multi-terminal HVDC network. Hitachi Energy’s scope covered factory engineering, delivery and site installation support through to commissioning of the 600 MW ±320 kV link.
