On 9 August 2024, the Shetland HVDC link and substation were officially energised and handed over to the Energy Supply Operator (ESO). The new substation and link facilitate the connection of 443 MW of clean renewable energy to the grid from the Viking Energy Wind Farm. The energisation marks just over four years of construction by SSEN Transmission and their principal contractors — a consortium of BAM Nuttall, Hitachi Energy and Siemens BAM — to bring the 600 MW HVDC connection between Shetland and the Scottish mainland into service.
