Shetland HVDC Link 2 (Shetland 2) 525 kV bipole HVDC subsea cable between Shetland and mainland Scotland, approx. 330 km subsea route with two parallel cables.
Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. is lead member of the Sumitomo Electric–Van Oord consortium selected by SSEN Transmission as preferred bidder, and subsequently party to a Capacity Reservation Agreement, for the Shetland 2 HVDC Link subsea cable. Under the agreement Sumitomo will design, manufacture and supply the 525 kV HVDC subsea cable system and support its installation between Shetland and the Scottish mainland. The bipole link has an approximate subsea route of 330 km, requiring about 660 km of manufactured cable across two parallel poles, and will transmit around 2 GW of renewable power as part of National Grid ESO’s ‘Beyond 2030’ reinforcement plan. Cable production will be undertaken at Sumitomo’s new subsea power cable factory at the Port of Nigg in the Scottish Highlands, with Shetland 2 acting as the anchor project that enabled this UK manufacturing investment.
