Foundation installation for the Seagreen offshore wind farm commenced in October 2021, marking the beginning of the main offshore installation campaign for the project’s turbine structures. This phase followed earlier development milestones, including the award of a 15‑year Contract for Difference (CfD) in 2019 for 454 MW and the Final Investment Decision reached on 3 June 2020, which collectively provided the commercial and financial underpinning for construction to proceed. With these elements in place, SSE Renewables, as lead developer and constructor, moved Seagreen from planning into large‑scale physical build-out in the North Sea, around 27 km off the Angus coast. The start of foundation installation represented a major logistical and engineering step for what is described as Scotland’s largest offshore wind farm, featuring the deepest fixed-bottom foundations of any wind farm in the world. It also enabled subsequent construction stages to proceed, notably the installation of Vestas V164‑10 MW turbines, which began in December 2021. Together, these activities were part of one of the largest construction projects undertaken in Scotland, ultimately enabling Seagreen to reach first power in August 2022 and full operations in October 2023. The commencement of foundation works in October 2021 therefore stands as the practical offshore construction launch for Seagreen’s generating infrastructure, underpinning its eventual 1.1 GW installed capacity and contribution to Scotland’s net-zero ambitions.
