Scroby Sands

Scroby Sands is an early commercial UK offshore wind farm sited on the Scroby Sands sandbank about 2.5 km off Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, with an installed scale that made it one of the first generation of UK offshore projects. Developed under the Crown Estate Round‑1 licensing process and originally delivered by PowerGen/E.ON, the site is now owned and operated by RWE Renewables UK. The project was delivered close to shore to exploit favourable shallow‑water wind resources and to support local supply chains and grid connections into Great Yarmouth. Construction and operation have been notable for challenges and lessons learned: the farm was built on a mobile sandbank that has since risen naturally, leading to seabed changes that have partially stranded some turbines and prompted bespoke operational solutions. Scroby Sands generated a substantial body of environmental and coastal‑process monitoring (including CEFAS surveys) that informed subsequent UK offshore wind consenting and scour‑protection practice. Operational innovation has continued: RWE and partners commissioned a bespoke amphibious crew transfer vessel to access turbines isolated by changing seabed conditions. The project has also experienced typical long‑lived operational issues of early fleets, including mechanical incidents and at least one turbine fire reported in recent years. Strategically, Scroby Sands served as a pioneering demonstration of nearshore fixed‑bottom technology and monitoring protocols that influenced later UK offshore developments, while highlighting long‑term asset‑management and decommissioning considerations for first‑generation sites.
