Terna - Rete Elettrica Nazionale SpA awarded Hitachi Energy contracts in 2006 to supply the two HVDC converter stations for the SAPEI interconnector, located at Fiume Santo in Sardinia and Latina on the Italian mainland. As the main HVDC technology supplier, Hitachi Energy provided the design, manufacture and delivery of the ±500 kV, 1,000 MW bipole converter stations that connect the SAPEI submarine DC cable to the Italian 400 kV AC grid. The converter stations entered service around 2009–2011, enabling high-capacity power transfer between Sardinia and mainland Italy via what was, at commissioning, the world’s deepest subsea HVDC cable link.
