In autumn 2020, a major maintenance campaign was initiated on the inter-array cable system at the 288 MW Sandbank offshore wind farm in the German North Sea. JDR Cables contracted the multi-purpose offshore vessel Olympic Commander, equipped with a 28‑metre Safeway Seagull walk‑to‑work gangway, to support the works. The maintenance project started in September 2020 and focused on the array cables running between Sandbank’s offshore substation and its 72 Siemens Gamesa turbines, which also contain optical fibre for data exchange and remote control from Vattenfall’s Esbjerg control centre. Olympic Commander was deployed to transfer technicians, tools and materials, enabling safe and efficient access to the turbines and substation for cable maintenance during the operational phase of the project.
