Sandbank offshore wind farm reached full commercial operation in 2017. Located 90 kilometres off the coast of Schleswig-Holstein in the German North Sea, adjacent to DanTysk, the 60 km² project comprises 72 Siemens turbines rated at 4 MW each, for a total installed capacity of 288 MW. Following first power in 2016 and progressive commissioning, all turbines, the offshore substation, and the export connection via the SylWin1 converter platform were completed and fully integrated during 2017. Once in continuous full-capacity operation, Sandbank was expected to generate about 1.4 TWh of electricity annually, equivalent to the consumption of roughly 400,000 average German households, and to avoid more than 700,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year compared with conventional generation. Since completion, Sandbank has operated as Vattenfall’s second major offshore wind project in the German North Sea and the second joint project with Stadtwerke München.
