On 17 August 2023, the Salamander floating offshore wind project developers selected Fugro to carry out a metocean survey for the proposed wind farm offshore Scotland. Salamander is being advanced by a joint venture between Ørsted, Simply Blue Group and Subsea7, which has opted to contract Fugro to obtain detailed site-specific environmental and oceanographic information. The decision marks a key procurement milestone, appointing a specialist contractor to deliver the data needed to refine and de-risk the project’s technical design in the challenging conditions off Scotland’s northeast coast. According to the announcement, the metocean survey is scheduled to begin in September and will run for approximately twelve months. During this period, Fugro will gather meteorological, oceanographic and wider environmental data sets that are essential to understanding wind resources, wave and current regimes, and site conditions. The insights generated from this campaign will directly inform the Salamander project’s engineering design, layout optimisation and installation planning, as well as feeding into environmental assessments and regulatory submissions. By awarding this contract ahead of the survey start, the Salamander joint venture demonstrates progression from initial concept and permitting groundwork into more detailed, data-driven development activities, helping to build the technical and environmental evidence base required for subsequent design, consent and procurement decisions.
