Hitachi Energy was selected by Terna, Italy’s transmission system operator, together with EDF to supply the high-voltage direct current (HVDC) technology for the Sa.Co.I.3 interconnector linking Sardinia, Corsica and mainland Italy. Under this multi-terminal ±200 kV, 400 MW scheme, Hitachi Energy will deliver its VSC-based HVDC Light solution, providing the full converter station technology package, including design, manufacturing and delivery of valves, transformers and associated HVDC equipment, as well as technical leadership for installation and commissioning. The scope covers replacement of the existing SACOI HVDC equipment with new multi-terminal converter stations that will increase transfer capacity and improve reliability for the Italian and Corsican grids. Hitachi Energy leads the overall converter EPC scope and works with civil partners for the onshore station construction.
