In the 1960s, Hitachi Energy supplied the mercury-arc valve converters and HVDC control systems for the original SACOI HVDC link between Codrongianos in Sardinia and San Dalmazio in Tuscany, routed via Corsica. This equipment formed the core of the onshore converter stations for the 200 MW, 200 kV monopole interconnector, enabling long‑distance DC transmission between Sardinia and mainland Italy. The scope covered manufacture and delivery of the converter valves and associated control systems during the project’s construction phase, supporting ENEL’s development of the first Sardinia–Corsica–Italy high-voltage direct current connection, commissioned in 1967.
