Siemens was contracted by Red Eléctrica España to build the HVDC converter stations for Project Rómulo, Spain’s first submarine interconnection for electricity transmission linking Sagunto on the Valencian mainland with Santa Ponsa in Mallorca. The contract covered the engineering, supply and construction of two onshore converter stations located at each end of the 237 km mainland–Balearic Islands HVDC link. These facilities convert AC power from Spain’s 400 kV grid to DC for subsea transmission and back to AC on Mallorca, enabling reliable bulk power exchange and supporting the phase-out of local coal-fired generation. Siemens’ scope formed the core converter infrastructure within the wider Rómulo project, which was built between 2011 and 2012.
