Peninsula–Balearic Islands (Sagunto–Santa Ponsa) 250 kV HVDC bipole submarine interconnector (COMETA / RÓMULO), approx. 237 km subsea and 7 km land route, 2 parallel cables.
Prysmian Cables & Systems was awarded a €118.7 million contract by Red Eléctrica de España as part of the COMETA (RÓMULO) project, Spain’s first HVDC submarine interconnection linking the Iberian Peninsula and Majorca. Working in consortium with Nexans, Prysmian’s scope covered turnkey design, engineering and supply of one of the two 250 kV paper-insulated HVDC submarine cables, associated land cable sections and a medium-voltage return cable, as well as fibre-optic data cables. Prysmian was responsible for manufacturing the subsea and land power cables at its Arco Felice plant in Italy and for offshore installation, including laying of the HVDC submarine cable, the return cable and fibre-optic cable using its cable-laying vessel Giulio Verne. The system connects Sagunto, near Valencia, to Santa Ponsa in Majorca, providing up to 400 MW of transfer capacity and strengthening security of supply to the Balearic Islands.
