In spring 2023, the Riffgat offshore wind farm’s onshore grid connection arrangement was changed by transmission system operator TenneT. Previously, the 80‑kilometre, 155 kV AC export link from Riffgat was connected to the 380 kV transmission grid via the Emden/Borssum substation. Following the change, the connection was reconfigured so that the link is now tied into the extra‑high voltage grid at the Emden/Ost substation instead. This involved extending the existing transformer station to accommodate the new connection point. The update represents a formal change in Riffgat’s designated grid connection node within the German transmission system, while maintaining its 113 MW export capability via 50 kilometres of submarine and 30 kilometres of land cable into the onshore grid.
