In June 2006, the second 400 kV AC submarine circuit of the Spain–Morocco REMO interconnection between Tarifa (Spain) and Fardioua (Morocco) was commissioned by Red Eléctrica de España (REE) and the Moroccan utility Office National de l’Electricité (ONE), doubling the technical exchange capacity from 700 MW to 1,400 MW and enabling a commercial exchange capacity of 800 MW. This reinforcement, which upgrades the Moroccan network from 225 kV to 400 kV, enhances frequency and voltage stability and improves the technical and economic operation of generation and transmission systems in both countries.
Red Eléctrica de España’s Refuerzo Eléctrico Mediterráneo Occidental (REMO), the electricity interconnection between Spain and Morocco, was commissioned in 2006, marking the start of full commercial operation of the cross-border link.
Installation of the submarine cables for the REMO Spain–Morocco second interconnection began in November 2005, when Red Eléctrica de España and its partners started laying the new submarine cables and installing the associated protection systems across the Strait of Gibraltar between Tarifa and Fardioua. This work followed completion of cable manufacturing and continued through to February 2006 as part of the project to reinforce and double the interconnection capacity.
Licence: Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)
In December 2001, the REMO project (second Spain–Morocco electrical interconnection) began the formal environmental impact assessment procedure with the submission of an initial summary report (memoria resumen), initiating the EIA process for the reinforcement scheme.
Installation of the first 26 km submarine interconnection cable between Fardioua (Morocco) and Tarifa (Spain) was completed and the link entered operation in August 1997, providing an initial exchange capacity of 700 MW for the REMO project.
