10.4km subsea electricity cable from Ballycastle to Rathlin Island, installed by Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE).
Northern Ireland Electricity installed a new 10.4km subsea electricity cable between Ballycastle on the County Antrim mainland and Rathlin Island, connecting the island to the main Northern Ireland electricity network for the first time. As part of its wider investment in the regional electricity network, NIE delivered the subsea cable installation works to provide Rathlin with a dependable, mainland-equivalent power supply and sufficient capacity for future demand growth and potential local renewable generation export. The project, developed over several years and completed in 2008, replaced the island’s reliance on local wind, diesel generation and battery storage with a permanent undersea cable link to the grid.
